The image of the two turtle doves is popularly thought to refer to romantic love, but here it alludes to the Old and New Testaments. The mother turtle dove, representing the OT, looks on as the NT is born. The nest, in the shape of the crown of thorns, foreshadows the death of Jesus Christ, which establishes the new covenant.
