Throughout the Bible, a rock is used as a metaphor for God, such as 1 Samuel 2:2, “There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God.” and Psalm 18:31, “For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God?”. Artists were given the freedom to illustrate this metaphor with whatever Scripture they chose to.
